ANDREW THOEN – 1933

Andrew Erickson Thoen one of the earliest pioneers and prominent farmers of the Farwell community passed away Thursday, November 9, at the age of 89 years.  Death was due to the infirmities of old age.

Andre Erickson Thoen was born March 9, 1844 in Dramman Ringerike, Norway.  At the age of 22 he immigrated to America and settled in St Paul where he lived five years.  He came to Alexandria by oxen in 1871.  He took up a homestead in Holmes City and in the meantime worked as a shoemaker for the late Chris Oppel.

In 1881, he was united in marriage to Johanna Mattson of Holmes City.  The marriage took place in Alexandria.  They took up their residence on his homestead where the rest of his life was spent.  His wife preceded him in death nine years ago.

The following children are left to mourn his passing:  Mrs Emma Ballard of Alexandria, Hjalmar of Duluth, Willie of Fergus Falls, Albert of Weyburn, Saskatchawan Canada, Oscar, Freddie, Theo and Edwin of Farwell and Theo (Mrs Johnson) of Minneapolis,  also three grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the home his son Oscar and later at Trysil Church in Holmes City Township.  Reverend J G Vaage officiated.  He was laid to rest beside his wife in the church cemetery.
