Hans , Ragnhild and their three daughters, Hanna, Helga and Maria, immigrated with his parents, his unmarried sister Mette and little nephew, Halvor and his brother Martin and his family, arriving in New York on 24 August 1868. Brother Halvor and brother Ole and his family had come to America the previous year and another sister, Marie Engemoen had arrived April 1868. Hans immediately took land in Holmes City township and lived there the rest of his life. His brothers and sister Marie eventually moved elsewhere.

Hans helped establish the Trysil Lutheran church congregation.

“Died on Wednesday of last week after a long illness. Mr. Strandvold was an early settler and once a prominent man in town and church affairs. He leaves a widow and two married daughters, Mrs. P.O. Myhr of this town and Mrs. Knute Lee of Cass County, ND. The funeral occurred on Monday, the Rev. H. Jensen officiating.”
