Bertinus emigrated to Amerika with his father and stepmother and 7 half brothers and sisters. They came to Holmes City twp in Douglas co, MN, but 20 year old Bertinus soon left to find his own way.
By 1874, he was living in Clayton co, IA and married Ambjør that year. Their first child was born there. By 1877, they were living in Lincoln co, South Dakota (then known as Dakota Territory). By 1880, they were homesteading in Moody county, South Dakota. Bertinus died there in 1886, at age 39.
