His father, E.P. Lobeck writes in his journal: April, 1875 “….Friday, the 16th, Per left early in the morning for Solbergs and was to haul a load of oats to Wahlin’s (their pastor) farm in Wennersborg and come home again in the evening. He had the Pastor to accompany him. It was very cold with a north wind and he had a gun with him which lay on the sacks in the wagon and when they got as far west as to Eric Snar’s, his day was numbered. The gun discharged and my dear Per who was walking behind the wagon was struck in the throat and he was killed instantly. He did come home the same evening–but stiff and dead. Neither he or we had any thought when he left in the morning healthy and happy to be in company with our dear Pastor Wahlin. Yes–strange are God’s ways.
April 20, 1875. “We took him to his last resting place in the grave and before we left home Pastor Wahlin talked to us about Corinthians II, Chapter 5, 9th verse. O Merciful God, help me to a blessed death.”

FATAL ACCIDENT.—A week ago last Saturday a young man named Peter Lobeck, living in the town of Holmes City, met with a fatal accident. He was walking beside his wagon when he saw some chickens and reached into the wagon box for his gun, taking it by the muzzle and drawing it towards him, when the hammer caught and discharged it, the load passing up his arm and striking him under the ear, causing his death. This is the second person killed in this vicinity within a few weeks by the careless handling of firearms, besides another maimed for life.
