John Grondahl

John Grondahl, who came to this country from Norway in 1882 and had lived in Pope county and in Holmes City ever since, except for a year and a half in northern Minnesota, died at his home in Holmes City township Thursday evening, December 19. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Grondahl was born in Norway February 28, 1858. He grew to manhood there, coming to America at the age of 24 years and locating first in Pope county near Lowry. He was married to Martina Halvorson at the St. Petri church at Lowry December 6, 1885, who survives him.

To this union nine children were born, of whom six survive their father; Hilda (Mrs. F.S. Fleming) of Alexandria; Enga (Mrs. C.H. Morris) Alexandria; David, who lives at Lowry; Peter, in Minneapolis, and Emil and Engval, at home. A daughter and two sons preceded him in death. There are four grandchildren and one great grandchild. A brother, Carl Erickson, lives in Norway.

Mr. Grondahl was a member of Trysil church for 55 years, and it was at that church that funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, after a service at the Engstrom Funeral home; Rev. Sheldahl officiating. Miss Priscilla Myhr sang “In the Sweet Bye and Bye” at the funeral home services and she and Martin Myhr sang “Good Night and Good Morning” and “Nearer My God to Thee” in Norwegian at the church.

Burial was in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were: W.R. Guiles, E.O. Grund, Gust Lordalen, Oscar Peterson, Martin Grondahl and Henry Grondahl.
