Bertha Olson Dalen

Bertha Olsdatter, daughter of Ole and Marte Halvorsdatter Mattisen, was born at Bakken in Skjæberget, Trysil, Hedmark County, Norway on April 26, 1856. She was baptized June 1, 1856 at Trysil Church. Her sponsors were Ole Halvorsen Skjæberget and his wife Olea Olsdatter, Kristoffer Mortensen, Kirsti Halvorsdatter, Helene Olsd.

Ole and Marte had two children. Bertha’s brother, Halvor Olson (Bergh) was born June 17, 1860 at Tørberget, Trysil, Hedmark County. Norway and was baptized on July 22, 1860.

The Trysil Church records from 1866 – 1873 show that Bertha’s father Ole Mattisen, a farmer, died January 27, 1866 at age 43 while living on Trolsberget. Her mother Marte married the widower Lars Mortensen Berg June 22, 1869 at Trysil, Norway. Lars brought his two daughters, Lina and Sina, from his first marriage to this new blended family.

In 1880 at the age of 24 Berte left Trysil and paying 235 NKr to travel on the ship Angelo for America with Fargo, Dakota Territory as her final destination.

In this area she met and married a man named Andreas (Andrew) S. Dalen in 1881. They homesteaded the southeast quarter of Section 10 in Georgetown Township, Clay County, Minnesota not far from the villages of Georgetown and Perley. This is where they built their home. There were no children born to this couple..

Berte died on December 31, 1890 at the age of 34 years, 8 months, and 5 days. Her burial was January 5, 1891 at the Kirkebo Cemetery near Perley, Minnesota.

Kirkebo Lutheran Church records show that on December 1, 1891 A. S. Dalen married Marie Olsdatter Kleve. To this union six children were born. They were Selmer, Oscar, Arthur, Clarence, Stella and Myrtle.
