Marte Halvorsdatter Berg

Marte Halvorsdatter was born 09 May 1831 to Halvor Olsen at Skjærberget, Trysil, Hedmark County, Norway. They lived on the farm Bakken.

Marte married Ole Mattisen 27 Dec 1853 at Trysil. They had two children:
-Berthe Olsdatter was born 26 April 1856 at Bakken in Skjærberget, Trysil, Hedmark, Norway.
-Halvor Olsen (later known as Bergh) was born 17 June 1860 at Trysil, Hedmark, Norway.

Ole Mattisen Toerberget was born 12 Dec 1821 at Tørberget, Trysil. He was the son of Mattis Mattisen Ronkainen b. ca 1777-1833 and Karu Trulsdatter born 05 March 1781 in Aspberget, N.Finnskoga in Sweden. Ole died 27 Jan 1866 at Trolsberget, Trysil and was buried there 4 Feb 1866.

Church records in Norway tell that on 29 June 1869 at the age of 38 Marte Halvorsdatter, daughter of Halvor Olsen married Lars Mortensen Berg, a 40-year-old widower, the son of Morten Larsen and his wife Rangdi Mattisdatter. Their witnesses were Halvor Torgalsen Sørhus and Nils Hansen Trolsberget.

Lars and his first wife Inger Persdatter had two living daughters:
-Lina born 11 September 1851.
-Sina born 23 March 1856.
-Another daughter, Raghnild, was born 08 May 1860 and perhaps died the same day.

Together Lars and Marte had five more children while living at Trysil, Norway.
-Oluf Arthur was born 27 August 1869. He died 9 June 1878 at the age of eight in Wiser Township, Cass County, Dakota Territory.
– Martin was born 17 May 1871. He died 6 June 1881 at the age of 10 in Wiser Township, Cass County, Dakota Territory.
-John was born 15 December 1872. He died at Gardner, North Dakota on 15 October 1942.
– Ragnhild was born 01 April 1874. She died 21 May 1874 in Trysil.
-Karen Oline (called Carrie) was born 23 May 1875. She died 21 July 1952 at her farm home in Wiser Township, Cass County, North Dakota. Carrie and her husband’s, (Nels Swenson) farm home was just one-half mile west of her parent’s homestead.

Marte, Lars and the following children – Oluf, Martin, John, Karen Oline and Sina – left Norway for America. They departed from Oslo Harbor on 7 July 1876 aboard the Angelo Line with Moorhead, Minnesota as their destination.

Marte and Lars homesteaded by the Red River in the northeastern part of Section 2, Wiser Township, Cass County, Dakota Territory. President Grover Cleveland granted the land to them on 15 February 1887. Here they built and lived in a log home.

Marte, Lars and their family became members of the Trysil Congregation in 1877. The name of the church was changed to Nora in 1885. The church is located 5 ½ miles east of what is now Gardner, North Dakota.

After Lars died their daughter Karen Oline, known as Carrie, and her husband Nels Swenson built a small house for her in their farmyard where she lived the rest of her life. Marte died April 14, 1909 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 5 days. She is buried with Lars and their sons Oluf and Martin at the Nora Pioneer Cemetery located about a half mile south of their homestead.
